Artist: Alma Cogan: mp3 download Genre(s): Pop Discography: Happy Valley Sweetheart Year: 2005 Tracks: 25 Alma Cogan was one of the most successful and tragical figures in English pop music of the '50s and early '60s. Her 18 graph hits were a record for a female isaac Bashevis Singer at the end of the '50s in England, and scorn existence part of the pre-rock & vagabond era, Cogan seemed capable of working with the new medicine when her life sentence was cut short. The daughter of a clothier, Alma Cogan was born in St. John's Wood and educated at St. Joseph' Convent School. It was Cogan's mother world Health Organization pushed her toward a calling as a isaac Bashevis Singer and onto the microscope stage. In 1948, at age 16, she was spotted in the chorus of High Button Shoes by EMI staff producer Walter J. Ridley (also responsible, a decennary later, for signing Johnny Kidd & the Pirates), world Health Organization afterwards signed her to the HMV judge. Around this same time, she began appearing with floor show at the Cumberland Hotel. Cogan began her vocation doing ballads, simply her first attain was a gewgaw tune called "Bell Bottom Blues" (not the Derek & the Dominoes song), which got to number basketball team on the British charts in 1954. A yr by and by, she topped the charts for the low and only time with "Dreamboat." She also covered several American hits, including "The Birds and the Bees" and "Wherefore Do Fools Fall in Love," which was a confidential information of the cooking stove she would show in her later vocation. By the turn of the '50s into the '60s, she was as well the star of her have goggle box syllabus, and she reached the apex of her success when Lionel Bart (whom, at one percentage point, she manifestly intended to conjoin) cast her as Nancy in Oliver! Her describe receded from the pop charts middling in the early '60s, as jr. performers such as Helen Shapiro coupled the EMI roster, but Cogan was a mending as a concert draw during the first half of the decade. During the '50s, Cogan attracted press attention as a personality beyond her vocalizing, for her horse sense of humor and for her solicitation of gilded clothes -- it was aforesaid that she never wore the same dress twice -- and her dwelling was filled with an over-the-top array of fashions. By the mid-'60s, she was much more celebrated in the gossiper columns for the overnight parties she threw at her Kensington High Street home, where guests included such various figures as Stanley Baker, Paul McCartney, Roger Moore, Noël Coward, Ethel Merman, and Lionel Bart, among many others. If she was no longer a chart-topping star, Cogan was still a much-loved figure to her peers, and remained in meet with the cutting edge of the popular music business concern, transcription the medicine of Burt Bacharach when he was still acquiring established, and befriending McCartney, wHO must've loved qualification the friend of EMI's biggest female pop star from the menses in which he was ontogenesis up. McCartney contributed pleximetry to the B-side of one of her mid-'60s singles, which resulted in her application "Eight Days a Week," as well as "Yesterday," "I Feel Fine," and "Just the ticket to Ride." There's no relation where that friendship might've light-emitting diode -- Cogan could easy have been another, more mature Cilla Black, her voice portion as an release for McCartney songs that weren't suited to the Beatles. If her version of "Eight-spot Days a Week" -- a to the highest degree startling re-thinking of the song, transforming it into a gloriously lyrical common mullein issue -- is whatever denotation, she might've done marvelous, splendid things with "For No One," "Your Mother Should Know," and "When I'm Sixty-Four." Alas, it was non to be. Cogan had simply proved able of making the transition to a more rocking reasoned, or at least of embracing some components of the last few age of changes in music, when disaster smitten. In 1966, she was diagnosed with genus Cancer. She received treatments and planned to continue her life history, even writing respective songs (under the name "Al Western") that were recorded by other singers. She kept working during the class, and an album was intended. Cogan continued concertizing, and while touring Sweden, she fainted. She was diagnosed as terminally ill, and died on October 26 of that year in a London hospital. Her final album, Alma, was released early the following year, just Cogan was never completely disregarded. Collections of her medicine have shown up passim the CD epoch, including a complete triple-CD anthology (Grand Canyon State of Alma). In 1992, the BBC presented a video documentary about her life and vocation. |

Choking Man
In addition to directional pretty much every great music picture of the 1980s, including Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and A-ha's "Take On Me," Irish director Steve Barron has racked up an electic list of credits from cult favorite Electric Dreams to Coneheads. Choking Man is a big departure from the music and sci-fi ferment he's best known for. A humble slice of immigrant blue-collar life in Queens, New York, the movie rises above the mundane with the inclusion of some gorgeous animated interludes and just a touch of Latin American-style magical realism.
Life isn't easy for Ecuadorian dishwasher Jorge (Octavio Gmez), who whole caboodle at the Olympic diner under the management of a beneficent boss played by Mandy Patinkin. Jorge is painfully shy and almost mute in his loneliness. All he does is lave dishes and sleep, moving from exercise to shack with his head hung low and his hat pulled down. His humdrum existence is shaken by the comer of a vivacious newfangled Chinese immigrant waitress named Amy (Eugenia Yuan) wHO couldn't be sweeter to him and tries to get him to come out of his shell. Getting in the way, however, is loudmouth misrepresent Jerry (Aaron Paul), a real tug who bullies and teases Jorge to the point of cruelty. At the same sentence, Jerry makes flirtatious moves on Amy, and Jorge, who is slowly development a smash on her, is flummoxed even further. His attempts to yield her small gifts he's picked up at the local penny-pinching store ar both miserable and touching.
What gives the movie its depth are the peeks it offers into Jorge's troubled creative thinker. Unable to relate to humans, he seems to identify with the blank shell faces in the bill poster above his sink that demonstrates how to hold open a strangling victim. At various points, the poster comes to life in animated form, and we see Jorge's fantasy world, a peaceable place with trees, rabbits, and memories of his youth. Unfortunately, Jorge's diminutive apartment has an unwelcome visitor: an imaginary doppelganger who urges Jorge to take control of life by any means necessary, including violent means, and we're light-emitting diode to wonderment if the poor guy rope is destined to snap and shoot up the diner or jump off a bridge.
Gomez has nigh no dialog to work with, only the handheld digicam is literally in his face, and his big expressive eyes serve as a great windowpane into Jorge's increasingly troubled soul. It's an unusual and memorable piece of screen performing. Yuan, excessively, is merriment to watch, keeping Amy perky and upbeat no matter how dreary her day-to-day life appears. Her attempt to pull together a Thanksgiving dinner for the skeletal system crew at the diner is odorous, as is the midget smile it elicits from Jorge. Still, such moments are momentaneous, and we're left wondering until the very last minute whether Jorge's dangerous fantasies may come to fruition. It gives this otherwise small-scale film a big overlayer of suspense.
Next time test chewing.

Monet Painting Sets Record At Auction
A Claude Monet painting has fetched a record £40.9 million at a London auction.
Le Bassin Aux Nympheas had been expected to fetch only half the amount when bidding began at Christie's on Tuesday.
The identity of the winning bidder has not been made public.
The painting was produced in 1919 in Giverny, France, and prior to yesterday had only been seen in public once in 80 years.
Monet's Le Pont du chemin had held the previous price record at auction, at £20.9 million.
The final price reached in the auction room for the Le Bassin Aux Nympheas yesterday was £36.5 million, but it later rose to over £40 million when taxes were added.
"There's never been such a picture sold at auction in Europe in the last 20 years," Oliver Camu of Christie's said.
"This evening's auction realised the highest total for any art auction ever held in Europe, and illustrates the continuing strength and confidence of the art market."
Experts claim the auction shows that the art market remains in a robust state despite the current economic slow down.

Hotline: The Help gets up-'Staged by fans
On Saturday, the local rock band opened Radio 92.9’s Earthfest, performing a noon set at the Hatch Shell, as well as closing the show at the local music stage.
The Help scored the prized slot by winning the OurStage.com online competition, in which more than 120,000 votes were cast to determine who’d get to perform on the main stage. More than 300 local acts entered. In addition to the Help, the local stage show also featured top-five finishers the Adam Ezra Group, Cahill, the Brew and Tim Blaine.
“We tried to approach this show the same way we approach every show,” Help guitarist Mark Brozek told Hotline, “play a tight set and enjoy our own music. We really didn’t let the fact that our audience was so huge shake us up too much. If anything it fueled our performance. There is certainly nothing like hearing a crowd that size cheering for you.”
The OurStage competition not only allowed the Help to play for the biggest crowd of its career, it also gave the band exposure on the OurStage Web site, where the Help notched about 5,000 plays. Not bad for a band that changed its name last year from Gino to the Help, a reference to the band members’ day jobs in the food industry.
Catch the Help on a much smaller scale June 6 at the All Asia Cafe in Cambridge, and June 21 at the Hard Rock Cafe.

Miley Cyrus gets ‘Rockstar’ challenge
A challenge has been issued to Miley Cyrus, and no, it’s not to cover up her naked teenage shoulder.
Remember last week’s news that some obscure Los Angeles alt-rock band accused Cyrus’ songwriting camp of ripping off its only hit? Well, Lustra is further milking the issue by challenging Cyrus to perform alongside them tomorrow in Los Angeles at the Viper Room.
Lustra plans to play its 2004 song “Scotty Doesn’t Know” with the hopes that Cyrus will then play - or lip sync or sing or whatever - her somewhat similar “Rockstar,” which dropped last year.
Lustra said the fans will decide if it got ripped off.
“We don’t want anything other than credit for the music we worked so very hard on,” said Lustra guitarist Nick Cloutman in a press release.
